Public Speaking Program

‘Glossophobia’ is the fear of public speaking. The word glossophobia comes from the Greek γλσσα glōssa, meaning tongue, and φόβος phobos, fear or dread.

‘Glossophobia’ is the technical term describing a phobia that countless research studies have shown affect millions of people young and old. Those who suffer from ‘Glossophobia’ tend to freeze in front of any audience, even a couple of people. Fear of public speaking can greatly impact how you grow personally and professionally. Overcoming this frustrating fear is a matter of methodically building self-confidence and discovering that there is no reason to be afraid. Though we live in an age of digital communications such as email, text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and on and on, it is still an undeniable fact that life is a contact sport. There is no escaping the necessity to communicate effectively with one another by spoken words. Learning the skills to be a commanding public speaker is essential in helping you to form strong, meaningful relationships, take risks to share your ideas, advance your career or eventually grow your business.

This course is designed to empower and embolden students at every grade level from elementary through high school by giving them the valuable tools to become articulate, compelling public speakers, creative writers, and skilled researchers able to manage communication anxiety. We will cover all the various types of speeches and oral presentations from informative, persuasive and extemporaneous to narrative, impromptu and entertaining. Students learn to select speaking topics and tailor them for specific audiences, to research and support their ideas, and to benefit from listener feedback. In addition, they will study how to incorporate well-designed visual and multimedia aids in their presentations for further clarity.

Lastly, this is not a one-way lecture course. It will be a fun, hands-on, interactive, challenging, and rewarding journey. The objective here is to help students of all ages embrace and enjoy the power of the spoken word.

We do not believe we are speaking in hyperbole when we say this course has the potential to be life changing for students struggling with shyness, self-esteem issues and reticence to communicate with confidence to others. Our hope is that what we study will open up a whole new world of self-assurance for each student beyond the ability to craft and deliver the perfect speech.
